Whale shark season in La Paz, Baja California Sur runs from October through April. Whale sharks gather in Bahía de La Paz to feed on plankton inside a federally protected refuge zone, and swimming with them is legal only with a permitted operator. Baja Expedition runs small-group trips from the La Paz marina throughout the season.
We are Baja Expedition, based in La Paz, Baja California Sur. Alejandro Ortega owns the boats and captains them. He grew up pulling pangas off this beach with his father and has worked these waters for more than ten years. What follows is what we tell guests on the phone, written down.
When is whale shark season in La Paz?
Whale shark season in La Paz runs October through April. It is a short run from the marina, not an offshore expedition.
Whale sharks come into the bay to feed on plankton. Plankton follows water temperature and nutrient movement, which is why the season has edges rather than a switch. Early October and late April are real parts of the season, but they are the thin ends of it.
If you want the bay quieter, look at October and November. If you want two species in one trip, look at January through April, when gray whales are also in Baja California Sur waters.
Will you actually see a whale shark?
We do not guarantee sightings and you should be careful with any operator who does. These are wild animals in an open bay, and some days they are not where they were yesterday.
What we will tell you is what conditions look like before you commit. If the week is bad, we say so. If we cancel for weather, you choose — full refund or free reschedule, and that is your call, not ours.
The other honest answer: whale shark encounters are usually short. A shark that is moving will outswim you in under a minute. A shark that is feeding vertically stays put and you get longer. Either way, you are in the water in short bursts rather than one long swim, and that is by design — the rules cap how long any one boat can spend with any one animal.
What are the rules for swimming with whale sharks in La Paz?
Swimming with whale sharks in Bahía de La Paz is regulated by SEMARNAT and CONANP, and permitted operators work inside a booking system with assigned time slots. The rules are not suggestions — boats are checked before they enter the zone.
Here is the sequence on the water:
- Vessel registration: Boats register with CONANP before heading out. Permits and guest numbers are verified.
- One boat per shark: Boats do not crowd a single animal.
- Approach from behind, at an angle: No cutting across, no approaching head-on, no passing over or under the animal.
- Five swimmers plus one guide, maximum: Larger groups take turns. Our trips cap at eight guests to one guide.
- Enter the water gently: No jumping, no backward rolls, no splashing.
- Keep the minimum distance from head and tail: CONANP sets specific distances and your guide will brief the exact figures.
- No touching, no riding, no chasing, no flash photography.
- Wetsuit or flotation at all times. We supply both.
The most common first-timer mistake is swimming at the shark. People see it, get excited, and kick hard toward the head. That breaks the approach rule and it usually ends the encounter, because the animal turns away. The people who see the most are the ones who swim parallel and slow.
What does the day actually look like?
You meet us at the La Paz marina. Our whale shark trips are small — most trips cap at eight guests to one guide — so there is no crowd, no queue and no megaphone.
- On the dock: Gear fitting. Masks, fins, wetsuits and flotation are all included. If a mask leaks we swap it on the dock, not in the water, because a leaking mask is the single most common reason a nervous swimmer has a bad morning.
- Short run out: The refuge zone is close to shore. On the way, Alejandro or Mateo Valenzuela briefs the rules, the entry technique and the hand signals. This briefing is in English or Spanish — we work fluently in both.
- Check-in at the zone: The boat is verified before entering.
- Spotting: The captain reads the surface. You are looking for a dorsal fin and a wide dark shadow, not a breach.
- In the water: Small groups, short entries, several turns.
- Back to the marina: Water and snacks on every trip; full-day trips include lunch.
If someone panics in the water, here is what happens: you are already wearing flotation, so you are not going under. The guide is in the water with you, not watching from the boat. Mateo is a Wilderness First Responder and an AIDA Freediving Instructor, and Alejandro is a PADI Freediver Instructor and a licensed boat captain. We carry an onboard oxygen kit, a first-aid kit and coast-guard-standard safety gear. Most of the time the fix is simply getting a hand on the boat and breathing for thirty seconds.
What else is in the water during whale shark season?
The Sea of Cortez is a UNESCO World Heritage site and Jacques Cousteau called it the aquarium of the world. Whale shark season overlaps with most of the other reasons people come to La Paz, which is why October to April is the strongest stretch of the year for the region.
Isla Espíritu Santo and the sea lion colony at Los Islotes are available all year, which matters if your dates land at the edge of whale shark season. Gray whales run January to April. Our whale watching trips operate December through April and follow permit rules — engine off at distance, no chasing.
Is it safe to book with a small owner-operated company in La Paz?
This is the question most people are actually asking, so here is the direct answer. Baja Expedition is owner-operated: the people who own the boats run the trips, and we are not a reseller or a cruise concession selling you a seat on someone else’s vessel.
Concretely: licensed boat captain, permitted operator, liability insured. Marine protected area permits. No-touch, no-feed wildlife policy. Reef-safe sunscreen only. Guides who are career watermen from this coast rather than seasonal international staff. Fluent English and Spanish, so nothing gets lost in the safety briefing.
The trade-off of booking small is real and worth naming: we have fewer boats than a large operator, so we sell out sooner, and we cancel for weather more readily than an operator with a quota to hit. We think that is the right trade.
